HEllo fellas , before i  start speaking let me tell you guys that there was a time when i considered the tips/tricks i am going to discuss today as super secrets , what i mean by that is that the only line which differentiates a designer of how he gets paid is how realistic he/she renders , so it makes you how good designer you are....and a designer will always try to remain unique to render his market.

Now,that being said , its time to move further, i know many people mostly beginner wont pay an eye to some of my points here , and that will be the reason for their failure , so be like a good student and start learning,

"A half of the illiteracy of a person is vanished as
soon as he considers him self illiterate"
                                                    (me,,)

I will try to cover all most of the points , but if still i miss something please give a feedback in comments,,

Tip NO: 1. The model should have very good details , and texture , lets say for example , i draw a box and i give it a wood texture , it will simple become releastic by adding bump, reflection, and displacement parameters to it,

Tip NO: 2. consider green your friend , green is life , life is green , what i mean by that is the better the vegetation in your scene the better the realism in the render,

TIP: USe photoshop to add real world grass and trees , thus the viewer will grasp the reality of grass and

Tip NO: 3. the shadows : the key to natures habit of making shades and tunneling of light through holes , no shadows means you are just making a tom and jerry grade graphic ,

Tip NO: 4. although this trick is a part b of tip 4, any how ,

The angles , if you just turn on the shadows , its not going to do any good untill and unless you make them visible , for example a scene with sun facing front side will make shadow at back side and that wont be any good to you ,so place your sun at right angle on horizontal elevation and at 45 degrees at vertical elevation ,

Tip NO: 5. Sun burn , b for burn , burn is bad , please please dont ever place sun projected to your model directly , it will cause over exposure , especially when the exterior paint is white ,
never ever ever use sun at 12.00 -3.00 pm daytime , as it will have very high light intensity and hence will make things worst, and Dont forget to make the intensity of sun lower from shadows menu if you think so ,

an another thing you can do is use a smoke white paint or dirty white texture , or offwhite color , i mean any thing but not default or plain white, try it and thank me later

please , i mean please do not make SUN directly facing to model , place some tree, house or any thing to let block the light intensity,

what could be better then an evening scene with light falling on a house through the spaces of leaves of a tree , yes this could be achieved by sketch up and vray,

Tip NO: 6. Vray presets , yes nigga, you can simply use someones setting on your renders , and that is perfectly fine for a beginner , but really even after you are an experianced personal , you wont have time to tweak each every thing in vray settings , any ways , i will be discussing vray settings in details in another post , vray presets are easily available online ,

Tip NO: 7.  So here comes the technical part , the light source and background image ,

the most asked and the most poorly answered question ,

"should i use hdri or vray sun or vray dome light"

yes , you are lucky that you are reading this article ,

first things first ,hdri are good , but requires alot of reasons and requiremens to work out fine, and for a beginner the luck wont work that well,

cons of hdri :

  • large file size and very expensive
  • requires very powerful computer to produce correct results
  • requires very good knowledge of light source and the file format and gamma value
  • the images are not very lit if hdri quality is not good
secondly,Vray sun is the best thing for actual sun parameters as chaos group have made it exactly as the real sun ,

thirdly, there is a myth that that vray dome with vray sun as light source in it produces highest quality renders , higher than any other vray version for other softwares such as max and maya,
now thats a myth but it has some truth in there, atleast for beginners,

here i am giving you people my personal presets , and sketch up file with dome light parameter,

wish you happy and realistic renderings!

How to import 2d plan from autocad to sketch up accurately and easily and make walls

Greetings master builders , i know we are doing alot to make this world a better place, but are we doing enough so that what we do will be remembered in history ?

well , lets put a brick to our great successful architectural work story ,

=> Today i am going to talk about how to make 3d models out of 2d plans imported from autocad , the tips and tricks to make the process faster , efficient, smoother and worth paying , i know most of us just want to dive in 3d modelling without understanding the need of accuracy of plan for a architectural house or model , now , one must understand the fact that most important part of modelling a house is drawing the walls from 2d plan.

so, here is my quick non-time consuming method which will promise to extrude and wall from any plan in a few minutes,

the exercise file is included in downloads in end of the post ,

Step No 1:  first of all make sure your autocad file is in dwg format , also the version of the autocad file should be lower than that of sketch up , for e.g autocad 2013 file will work flawlessly in sketch up 2015

Step No 2 : Remove all unnecessary objects from autocad file in using autocad software , the way of doing it is press CTRL +A and and  pressing shift while selecting the plan you want to import to sketch up

Step NO 3 : enter the command ''purge ''and then select purge all to delete all properties of  recently deleted objects to decrease the size of auto-cad file , now we are ready to import it in sketch up

Step No 4: open sketch up and from file menu select import,as soon as the window import window opens , change the format from "all supported images " to "autocad files (dwg or dwf)",

select the the correct units and the file from the required location and select import

Step No 4:the plans imported looks like the figure given below all nasty and creepy right?
press CTRL+A then  right click on any lines imported and select "Make Group"

Step No 5: Now , from camera options select parallel projection

Step No 6: also  , from camera options select standard views> top

Step No 7:    Now , press "L " from keyboard and start tracing the exterior lines of walls imported from autocad,BY click on every corner once, and continue till the last point, and make sure a surface is produced , other wise repeat the processs.

WARNING:  TRY NOT LET THE CONTINUITY OF THE LINE BREAK FOR BEST RESULTS, EVEN IT DOES BROKE CLICK ON THE LAST POINT AND CONTINUE TILL THE STARTING POINT

Step No 8: press "F " from the keyboard and click once inside the surface made in the previous step and then press 0.2 m for according to the size of the wall

step no 9 : select the wall space and make reverse face such that white face is towards you ,

step no 10 : And then press "P" from keyboard and click on the wall and enter the required plinth level for my case 0.45m and press enter, then again click on wall face and enter the wall height 3.2 and then again repeat the same process and enter 1.0  for roof wall, the model will become ,

**** final model looks like ,,  :)

please comment if there are some question and share if you like the tutorial for more !

How to navigate while modeling an interior scene in sketch up, solution to having problem with clipping and stucking in walls and small spaces

The time passed by and you kept on learning, but still find yourself in a complicated situation of objects to close each other or stucking in walls while zooming or clipping of objects or hard to work with , i know the pain when you see renders of someone else with so much high realism and when you start to model ,u  find yourself in a wet-mud,

Now , less with talking and starting to unleash the secrets i learned ,of how to make and model an interior scene with ease , now believe me these are my personal secrets , so follow them carefully :)

Step No 1: first of all make the FOV aka field of view  greater , now that can be accessed differently on different versions of sketch up , for my case i am using Sketch up 2017

that is : Camera>field of view

fig.2 before changing field of view

Now , by default it is at 45 degrees , change that to 75 , now what will happen is that you can simply view more in single view ,

fig.2 after  changing FOV

So , luckily half of the problem is now solved, now whats next , still not satisfied ,
alright then  ,lets have the second round

Step No 2:  The second best thing you can do is just relax , well i was joking , no relaxing is allowed for a designer lol ,

The second thing i would like to recomend is making the walls invisible , believe me it the best tweak i have ever heard of , in  3dmax you can simple switch of the walls view from outside but in sketch up we should be doing some of the work by our selves , its very simple, just follow the steps ,

1- erase all the out side face of  walls from out side , we all know in sketch up the walls are composed of two planes , which is very helpful for sections cutout but in interior design we need a surface which should be called wall and thats it! i mean thats!it! , so no bullsh*t   of stucking inside walls while rotating and orbiting  views inside the rooms ,

2- now secondly you should make the walls invisible , so that if accidently you came out from the house or the room you are desiging you can simple go inside from where you left :

Fig : erasing external wall faces and before applying glass material

thanks to sketch ups support for two face textures , from that ideology you can simply apply two different materials on the same surface but on two different opposite sides ,

Fig : after applying glass material

So ,if in case your interior wall also got glass material it can simply be change to wall color you want and the other one will stay at its place, the figure below shows untouched interior scene with exterior face tranparent,

Step No 3: Now this is not a step but an advice , if you a laptop or desktop with 4 gb of ram or if even above it and still gets long time to open interior scenes , then there is a good and a bad news for you ,

The Bad NEWS:  is that it will be nearly impossible for you to work with interior models , the reason is because as soon you start adding models downloaded from internet suchas sofas, beds, chanlers, carpets , you scene start to grow in size , and what that means is that your sketch file size may exceed up to 200-400 mb , and that size can not be hanlded with a 4 gb ram , you might be able to open a large size file from some one else but it will be impossible for you to model one , and similarly even navigating through it will give you lags ,

The GOOD News : is that you can increase your ram size by simple plugging new rams , sounds simple isnt it , but an upgrade of 4gb ram to 8 gb is a life changing experiance ,

Secondly , if opening a large sketch up file takes a long time to open or if even doesn't opens anyway , then its time for software upgrade , believe me upgrading to sketch up 2017  from 2015 is a decision i never regret, the file opening time for me  reduced from 15 minutes to 15 seconds ,, unbelievable!! , may be sketch up 2017 without vray is doing some game here , who knows until a stable vray 3.0 is out , and we test it !

My final render looked like this :
